Takayuki Hirao, the director behind Pompo: The Cinephile, along with his creative team, is currently working on a new film titled Wasted Chef. The first glimpse of the film was revealed through teaser art, showcasing an American-style diner called The Day where the wasted chef works.
The announcement was made by the director at the New Chitose Airport International Animation Film Festival, held from November 1 to 5. The festival also featured a screening of Pompo: The Cinephile on 35mm film, adding to the anticipation for Wasted Chef.
The team working on Wasted Chef includes Takayuki Hirao as the director, Shingo Adachi as the character designer (known for Sword Art Online), Kenta Matsukuma handling the music (previously worked on Pompo and Kamen Rider Black Sun), and animation by CLAP (known for Pompo and The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes).
For those unfamiliar with Pompo: The Cinephile, the film follows a producer named Pompo in “Nyallywood,” the movie-making capital. Despite being known for B-movies, Pompo decides to have her assistant Gene direct her next script, a drama starring a legendary actor and a young actress. As the production faces challenges, Gene must rise to the occasion and prove himself as a first-time director.
Directed by Takayuki Hirao and produced by CLAP, Pompo the Cinephile celebrates the magic of movies and the highs and lows of the creative process. It follows a new director and his team as they strive to create a cinematic masterpiece, highlighting the passion and dedication required in filmmaking.
