Japanese entertainment giant TOHO recently made a significant move by acquiring a 6.09% stake in CoMix Wave Films, the renowned anime management, production, and distribution company. This investment aims to enhance the studio’s working environment, improve the quality of their projects, and expand creative opportunities.

TOHO’s collaboration with CoMix Wave Films dates back to 2013, starting with the distribution and production of director Makoto Shinkai’s films in Japan, including popular titles like “The Garden of Words.” This recent acquisition further solidifies their partnership and commitment to supporting the studio’s growth.

In addition to this stake in CoMix Wave Films, TOHO also recently completed the acquisition of North American animation distributor GKIDS. This move now makes GKIDS a wholly-owned subsidiary of TOHO International, based in Los Angeles. GKIDS has been instrumental in bringing Shinkai’s works to the US audience, such as “Weathering With You” and “Your Name.”

This strategic investment follows TOHO’s previous acquisitions in the animation industry, including the full ownership of Science SARU and the establishment of TOHO animation STUDIO. These moves demonstrate TOHO’s dedication to expanding its presence in the anime sector and supporting talented creators like Makoto Shinkai.

CoMix Wave Films, founded in 2007 through a management buyout, has been a key player in the anime industry, particularly known for producing and distributing Shinkai’s acclaimed films. With a focus on animation production, planning, financing, distribution, and rights management, the studio has been behind hits like “5 Centimeters Per Second” and “Weathering With You.”

Overall, TOHO’s increased stake in CoMix Wave Films signifies a strategic investment in the future of anime production and distribution, solidifying their position as a key player in the industry. This move is expected to pave the way for more innovative projects and collaborations in the anime world, benefiting both creators and audiences alike.
