The new The Rose of Versailles anime film, based on Riyoko Ikeda’s classic shojo manga, is set to premiere on January 31, 2025. The film, produced by MAPPA, has recently announced three new additions to its already impressive cast lineup.

Joining the main cast are Fukushi Ochiai, known for his role as Sanou in BEASTARS, who will be voicing Louis XVI. Banjo Ginga, famous for his role as Gihren Zabi in Mobile Suit Gundam, will take on the role of General Jarjayes. Mayumi Tanaka, recognized as the voice of Luffy in One Piece, will be portraying Maron Glacé Blanc.

The film’s main cast includes Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar François de Jarjayes, Aya Hirano as Marie Antoinette, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as André Grandier, and Kazuki Kato as Hans Axel von Fersen. The crew behind the film includes director Ai Yoshimura, known for works such as Ao Haru Ride and Dance with Devils, and screenwriter Tomoko Komparu, who has worked on projects like Kimi ni Todoke and Yona Yona Penguin.

The original manga, which ran from 1972 to 1973 and later from 2013 to 2018, has been beloved by fans for decades. The anime adaptation, consisting of 40 episodes, aired from 1979 to 1980.

The new film follows the story of Oscar François de Jarjayes, who disguises herself as a man and serves as a soldier, Marie Antoinette, who becomes the queen of France, André Grandier, Oscar’s loyal friend, and Hans Axel von Fersen, a charming count from Sweden. Set in late 18th Century Versailles, the characters navigate through their intertwined destinies amidst the turbulent times of the era.
