Produced as part of the Animation ID project by Dai Nippon Printing, this series, along with others like Moriarty’s Perfect Crime and Marui Kanojo to Zannen na Kareshi, relies more on motion comics than traditional animation techniques. The goal behind these productions is to deliver anime more quickly in response to consumer demands.
However, the underlying issue lies in the lack of genuine artistic expression in ‘light anime.’ Instead of using budget constraints as a creative challenge, these productions prioritize quantity over quality to meet the insatiable appetite of consumers. With an oversaturation of anime content already available across a wide range of genres, the relentless pace at which new series are being churned out is unsustainable and places undue pressure on animators.
The essence of anime should not be reduced to mere eye-catching visuals for social media shares. Instead, it should be a medium for storytelling, creativity, and meaningful artistry. If ‘light anime’ was introduced as a means to provide artists with a breather from the rigorous production demands, it could have been a welcome addition to the industry. Unfortunately, the current trend reflects a profit-driven approach that undermines the integrity of the art form.
