The Gundam SEED series is expanding with the announcement of a new prequel project called Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO. This project is set to continue the story from Gundam SEED FREEDOM and the original script for it was actually completed 20 years ago.

The screenplay for Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO was written by Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita during the initial planning stages of Gundam SEED FREEDOM. Director Mitsuo Fukuda, along with producer Hisakazu Naka and voice actor Soichiro Hoshi, shared that the project was originally intended to be an OVA.

While the format of Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO has not been finalized yet, the team behind it is excited to bring this prequel project to life. The original Gundam SEED FREEDOM film was a massive success in Japan, earning 4.86 billion yen and becoming the highest-grossing Gundam film to date. It was also recently added to Netflix on September 1, 2024.

Directed by Mitsuo Fukuda at Bandai Namco Filmworks, Gundam SEED FREEDOM tells the story of an era called Cosmic Era (C.E.) where humans known as Coordinators, born with enhanced abilities due to genetic modifications, clash with Naturals, who are born naturally. The Destiny Plan, which aimed to assign roles to individuals and eliminate competition, was ultimately rejected in favor of protecting humanity’s freedom and aspirations.

Fans of the Gundam SEED series can look forward to the upcoming Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO project, which promises to delve deeper into the lore and history of this beloved franchise. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new addition to the Gundam universe.
