GKIDS Brings Hideaki Anno’s Live-Action LOVE & POP Film to North America
In a recent announcement, GKIDS revealed their plans to showcase Hideaki Anno’s groundbreaking 1998 live-action film, “LOVE & POP,” in theaters across North America. The film, directed by the acclaimed creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, will make its debut on February 21 at the IFC Center in New York City, followed by a screening at the American Cinematheque’s Los Feliz Theatre in Los Angeles on February 23, with additional cities to be announced.
A Glimpse into Anno’s Live-Action Debut
“LOVE & POP” offers a unique glimpse into the world of high schooler Hiromi, portrayed by Asumi Miwa, as she navigates the complexities of teenage life on a single date – July 19, 1997. Through Anno’s innovative storytelling techniques, including shifting aspect ratios, rapid cuts, and fisheye-lensed perspectives, viewers are immersed in Hiromi’s introspective journey as she grapples with love, desire, and the pursuit of self-discovery.
Inspired by Ryu Murakami’s novel “Love and Pop: Topaz II,” the film delves into the realm of enjo kosai, or compensated dating, as Hiromi embarks on a quest to acquire a coveted topaz ring by the end of the day. Anno’s departure from traditional filmmaking norms and his embrace of experimental form offer a raw and unfiltered portrayal of youth in a Japan grappling with societal shifts and cultural transitions at the turn of the millennium.
A Film Ahead of Its Time
As Anno’s first foray into feature-length live-action filmmaking, “LOVE & POP” stands as a testament to his artistic versatility and boundary-pushing storytelling. Created between his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion and iconic projects like Shin Godzilla and Shin Kamen Rider, the film showcases Anno’s ability to blur the lines between reality and fiction, inviting audiences to explore the nuanced layers of teenage existence in a rapidly evolving world.
For viewers eager to experience Anno’s visionary approach to storytelling beyond the realm of animation, “LOVE & POP” promises a thought-provoking and visually captivating cinematic experience that transcends traditional narrative structures. As GKIDS brings this cinematic gem to North American audiences, it serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of Anno’s creative vision and his ability to challenge conventional norms in pursuit of artistic excellence.
Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of “LOVE & POP” as it unfolds on the big screen, inviting viewers to reflect on the timeless themes of youth, identity, and the pursuit of authenticity in a world defined by change and uncertainty.
